DOVER - Nothing could stop the Western Boone offense on Friday night in their Monon Athletic Conference game Friday night with Greencastle. Western Boone scored touchdowns on 11 of their 12 drives (the lone exception when they intentionally turned it over on downs in the final minutes) and scored a school-record 76 points in a 76-34 win over the Tigers Cubs. "Our guys up front - the more physical team was going to win," Western Boone head coach Justin Pelley said. "That's what we said tonight, and they do some scary stuff on offense. Their quarterback is pretty good and we aren't there yet with our deep backs. We're not used to playing man against teams that throw it. We don't see that a lot, so that's a welcome to the conference and I mean that in a good way because he does some really good things that kept us on our toes." Early on, it was clear the game was going to be a high scoring affair. Western Boone scored on its first three drives, getting touchdown runs of 2 and 57 yards from Jake Smith, along with a 69-yard pass from Brennan Kopriva to Dylan Sheets. Greencastle countered with touchdowns on their first two drives making it 21-14 Stars with 3:52 left in the first quarter. The Western Boone defense got the first stop of the game on the Tiger Cubs next drive, and Zander Venis blocked a punt that set up the Stars on the Greencastle 10 and led to another Smith touchdown. Western Boone got a second-straight stop, and capitalized with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Kopriva to Sheets to make it 35-14. "I felt like we were rolling pretty well, but with a team like that, we knew they could score quickly," Pelley said. "They can put up points in a hurry, so that's what you have to be careful with. I felt like if we could get some stops we would be OK." freestar Greencastle wouldn't go away. They scored on a 66-yard pass to get within 14, then got an onside kick and scored a few plays later to make it 35-28 with 6:29 to go in the half. But Jake Smith scored from 68 yards out to make it 42-28, and Western Boone got another stop when Zander Venis forced a fumble on the WeBo 4 that was recovered by Carson Nicley. WeBo went down the field and scored in the final second to go into the half up 49-28. "Zander made a big impact all night," Pelley said. "They were double and triple teaming him and still made plays. We had other guys step up too, which you have to do in those situations. He's a game changer." Western Boone got two rushing touchdowns from Kopriva in the second half. He also found Sheets for the third time in the night. Nate Thompson capped the scoring in the fourth quarter, setting the Western Boone school record for most points in a game. The previous record was 70 against Monrovia in 1998. Smith rushed for 330 yards and five touchdowns in the game. Kopriva was 5 of 6 for 162 yards and three scores. He added 86 yards rushing and two more score. Sheets had three catches for 139 yards. freestar Western Boone travels to North Montgomery on Friday. "I hope we take some confidence from this," Pelley said. "We still have some things to work on defensively, but it's week to week. The funny thing about football is it's week to week. We'll see what North Montgomery has for us next week." Will Willems is the Sports Editor of the Lebanon Reporter. Follow him on Twitter @Will_Willems.
