Errors plague Stars in 17-16 loss

Western Boone sent their Varsity Baseball team to McCutcheon Saturday for a game that certainly didn't lack in the runs scored column. In the end, the Mavericks won in the bottom of the 7th inning by a final score of 17-16. The Stars jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning but immediately found themselves down 4-3 after the completion of that first inning. That pattern really repeated for most of the next 7 innings. Western Boone gave up 8 unearned runs in the contest; while this does not come close to meeting the team's expectation or standard, the young team will learn from the experience and grow as a result. Offensively the Stars continued to stay white hot at the plate. They were led by senior Gavin Hawkins who recorded 4 hits. Sophomore Quinn Westerfeld and Freshman Jack Mallory each added 3 hits of their own. Easton Nance added 2 hits and with single hits during the game were Kahne Reid, Beau Sawyer, Cale Scagnoli, and Layton Yancey. Pitchers Levi Stewart, Brennan Kopriva, and Beau Sawyer worked together to pitch the first four innings. The Mavericks have an extremely powerful lineup which includes two high level D1 commits, the first three pitchers did their best to keep McCutcheon at bay and give their team an opportunity to win. Sophomore Owen Oakley pitched in the 5th inning and freshman Easton Nance pitched the 6th and 7th. The pair, who are used to working together from their doubles time on the tennis court, were able to hold the high-powered Mavericks offense to 0 earned runs over their combined three innings. In the end, errors cost the Stars the game. It wasn't a single error or a single play, it was a combination of plays over the nearly three-hour game. Western Boone will have little time to dwell on the mistakes from Saturday before turning their attention to this week's conference series with Frankfort. Frankfort currently holds the second spot in the conference on their own, while Webo sits alone in third. This week's conference games will take place on Tuesday and Thursday and then this weekend will be a really fun opportunity as the Stars will host Clinton Central at Loeb Stadium in Lafayette for two games.
