According to newspaper reporter Will Willems, Crawfordsville had not been beaten by the ten-rule in a baseball conference sweep since the inception of MaxPreps in 2003. That changed Wednesday evening as the Stars Varsity Baseball team defeated the Athenians by a score of 13-0 in five innings. That was after the Stars won Tuesday evening in five innings by a score of 11-1. Offense was dialed in for the Stars as they started the game by having their first eight hitters safely reach base! By the end of the first frame, the Stars lead 8-0. Webo kept their foot on the gas scoring in four out of the five innings played. Layton Yancey and Kahne Reid lead with two hits each. Recording one hit in the game were Hawkins, Westerfeld, Stewart, and Nance. Yancey lead the RBI column with 3, Nance, Stewart and Mallory each drove in 2, and a single RBI was recorded by Westerfeld. Defensively the Stars were extremely sharp. Cale Scagnoli earned player of the game attributes for his tremendous play(s) in centerfield. The middle infield duo of Howe and Hawkins worked hard including a huge double play to end the 3rd inning! Jack Mallory started behind the plate and did a great job calling the game and completing the battery. Westerfeld at first base contributed with a handful of tough digs while Stewart at 3rd did his part on a few tough ground balls. Yancey and Reid had opportunities to show off their route running abilities in the outfield and both capitalized - overall, it was a tremendous team effort on defense. The freshman, Easton Nance, moved his conference record to 3-1 with the 5 inning complete game shutout. It took Nance only 51 pitches to shut down Crawfordsville. Easton lived in the zone and relied on his defense, walking only one batter. Nance allowed 0 runs and recorded one strikeout. The victory moves the team record to 10-8 overall and 6-3 in conference. Frankfort is currently in first place in the conference with only two losses. The Hot Dogs come to Dover next week as the Stars will have an opportunity to fight for the top spot in the Sagamore. Before then, Western Boone will travel to McCutcheon on Saturday for one game at 11:30.
