Stars 6th inning rally not enough to overcome Blackhawks

The Stars Varsity baseball team travelled to Sheridan Thursday evening for a rainy battle with the Blackhawks. Untimely errors early left the Stars in a 6-1 hole after 4 innings. In the 5th inning the Stars’ bats came alive and they were able to score 6 runs and took a 7-6 lead. The Blackhawks responded with two runs of their own in the 6th and eventually Sheridan recorded the 8-7 victory. After a rough week with less than stellar defense, the rally in the 5th could potentially be the spark this young team needs to get going for the remainder of the season. Brennan Kopriva pitched well for 4 innings and allowed 4 earned runs. One of the highlights of the evening was sophomore Owen Oakley pitching two innings of relief in which he completely shut down the Blackhawks allowing no runs. Levi Stewart was called upon to close and allowed 0 earned runs. Offensively Quinn Westerfeld lead the charge with 3 hits, and Brennan Kopriva added 3 hits of his own and 2 RBIs. Freshmen Beau Sawyer and Easton Nance had the other two Stars hits; Nance recorded 2 RBIs and Sawyer added the other RBI. The Stars are sticking together through some early season adversity and they look forward to their next opportunity at Pike this Saturday.
