The varsity girls tennis team picked up an outstanding win Monday in their season opener versus a solid Benton Central team. Varsity picked up a very close 4-1 win and JV won 5-0. Locking in the first point of the day for the Stars was the new 2D duo of Grace Maners and Paige Anderson. They got down 0-3 in the first set, then surged back and got in a rhythm and won 6-3, 6-3. Next up was the new 1D senior duo of Janie Ransom and Olivia Smith. They played great at the net all evening, winning 6-1, 6-4 and fending off a comeback attempt in the second. Junior Isabel Adams made her debut at 1S and came up short 1-6, 3-6, but displayed great mental toughness throughout the match by bouncing back and forcing a number of long, tough games. Needing one more spot to secure the team win, new 3S sophomore Jade Strong rose to the occasion and pulled out a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory. She was up 5-1 in the third before finding herself at 5-4, but held on for the win when it mattered most. Finally, senior Abby Brunty, returning at 2S, was able to get a hard fought win of her own in the day’s longest match, winning a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 battle. The JV team looked great as well, winning all but two spots. The closest match of the day came from 1S Ellie Whiteley who was in a back and forth battle but ultimately won a close 7-5 tiebreaker. The Stars will host Lafayette Jeff Wednesday at 5:30PM for their home opener.
