On Saturday, January 28, 2025, the Western Boone wrestling team traveled to Crawfordsville to compete in the sectional round of the state tournament. The Stars battled some tough competition and walked away with a third place finish out of 11 teams. Kameron Mikesell (157) was the lone sectional champion for the Stars. At 106lbs, Jackson Bloss picked up a major decision victory over Covington in the quarter final round before falling to the eventual champion from Southmont in the semifinals. Bloss then won by decision over Zionsville and North Vermillion to secure 3rd place and advance to the regional round of the state tournament. At 113, Jaxsyn Mathews lost his opening match to the ultimate bracket winner from Zionsville. Mathews then battled his way through the consolation side of the bracket picking up wins by pin over North Vermillion and Parke Heritage. Mathews lost his match for third place, taking home 4th place, but earning a ticket to regionals. Cale Scagnoli jumped out to an opening round lead over a tough opponent from Southmont at 120lbs but was unable to hang on to the lead and lost his first match. Scagnoli then pinned his way past Covington and defeated South Vermillion by a major decision to earn his way to regionals. In a rematch from the first round, Scagnoli again jumped out to an early lead over Southmont, unfortunately, Scagnoli gave up a set of third period near-fall points and was unable to hang on for the win. Jacob Anderson (126) lost his opening round match to an opponent from Zionsville. Anderson then pinned his way through the wrestle-back rounds earning victories over North Vermillion and Southmont, and a trip to regionals. Like Scagnoli at 120lbs, Anderson had the opportunity to exact a little revenge over his Zionsville opponent for the third-place match. Anderson wasted no time getting to his offense and managed to win by pin with just nine seconds remaining in the first period. At 157lbs, Kameron Mikesell showed why he’s been the anchor to Stars’ wrestling team all season long. He won his quarter-final match over Covington by technical fall in the second period. In the semi-final match, Mikesell saw a tough opponent from Riverton Parke. The match was scoreless throughout the first period. Riverton Parke got a reversal in the second period to draw first blood, but Mikesell showed his trademark tenacity and obtained a reversal and a set of near-fall points to make the score 6-2 after two periods. 40 seconds into the third period, Mikesell was able to pin his opponent and earn a birth into the championship. The final match was a rematch from earlier in the season against Parke Heritage. Mikesell improved on his victory from earlier and won in dominant fashion via a third period technical fall (16-0). Congratulations Kameron! At 215lbs, Jacob Smith won his quarter-final match against Covington by third period technical fall. Smith was then upset by his opponent from Parke Heritage in the semi-final round. Smith did not let the loss bother him, though, picking up a second period pin over Crawfordsville to earn his way to the regional round of the state tournament. He then duplicated the feat, winning his third-place match also via second period fall. At 285lbs, Isaac El-Shahat had the best performance of his career so far. Isaac made quick work of his first opponent from Fountain Central, pinning him in just over a minute. El-Shahat then had a dog fight in the semi-final match against a tough opponent from Zionsville. Isaac fought hard but eventually fell 5-9. El-Shahat gathered himself and then went to work in the consolation semi-final round. Isaac defeated his opponent from South Vermillion 10-0 to win by major decision and advance to regionals. El-Shahat wrestled well in his final match of the day but fell in the second period to a tough opponent from Crawfordsville and took home fourth place. Isaiah Garland (132), Lincoln Rose (144), Destin Caraballo-Mercado (150), Broden Wilson (165), David Puckett (175), and Heath Williams (190) all fought hard, but saw their seasons come to an end. Trey Fuston (138) battled through one of the toughest brackets but came up just short of earning an outright birth into the regional round. Fuston is the alternate and may compete if one of the other placers is unable to continue. The seven advancing wrestlers will travel to North Montgomery High School to compete in the regional round on February 7. The action will start at 9:00am.
