On Monday, December 16, 2024, the boys and girls wrestling teams traveled to Tri-West for a combined dual meet. Both teams competed well. The boys dominated their competition, winning 58-19. At the conclusion of the girls’ dual meet, the team score was tied. Western Boone gave up the fewest forfeits, however, which gave the Stars the criteria needed to win, 19-18. The girls’ meet started off with Alyx McCormick receiving a forfeit. Cora Somers was up next. Somers agreed to wrestle up two weight classes to be able to compete. Somers showed grit and determination in wrestling a stronger, heavier, opponent. Unfortunately, she suffered a minor injury during the match that prevented her from being able to finish and giving the Bruins the win by default. Ava Orr also agreed to move into a higher weight class, so she could compete. Orr came out in an aggressive fashion and dominated her opponent with a 31-second win by pin. The Bruins answered back with a pin of their own over Macy Williams. The final two contested bouts were split between the Webo and Tri-West. Kirstin McCormick showed off her skills in obtaining a second period pin for the win. Kenzlei Mathews put up a good fight in the final match of the girls’ dual, but was unable to secure the win. The boys’ prevailing performance wrestling team started with a first period pin by Kameron Mikesell (157). The win was followed by Broden Wilson (165) winning via a third period technical fall. David Puckett (175) and Mason Foster (190) each received forfeits. Jacob Smith (215) stuck to his plan of being aggressive right off the whistle and secured a victory by pinning his opponent in the second period. Isaac El-Shahat (285) also, came out with some passion, needing just 23 seconds to pin his opponent. The win was the fasted pin for the day. Jackson Bloss continued the Stars’ winning ways, with a crushing pin just past the three-minute mark. The win gave the grapplers a 41-0 lead. The Bruins then went on a four-match win streak of their own, picking up technical falls over Jaxsyn Mathews (113), Cale Scagnoli (120), and Jacob Anderson (126). All three wrestlers showed a lot of moxie in fighting to avoid giving up the pins and additional team points to the Bruins. The most exciting match of the evening took place in the 132lbs weight class. Isaiah Garland squared off against a tough adversary who was able to jump out to a 17-3 by the beginning of the second period. Just when it looked as if Garland was going to be the fourth technical fall in a row for the Bruins, things began to turn around. Garland showcased superior conditioning and strength to battle back and get the better of his foe in several scramble situations. Unfortunately, there was not enough time for Garland to complete his comeback, and he ended up losing 12-21. Garland’s refusal to quit managed to save valuable team points for the Stars. Isaac Moore (132) received a forfeit, as did Andres Morales (150). Trey Fuston (144) went on a scoring rampage against his opponent in the final contested bout of the evening. Fuston was able to get a 20-3 technical fall midway through the second period. The girls wrestling team will not compete again until they travel to the south side of Indianapolis for the Beech Grove Holiday Classic tournament on December 28, 2024. The wrestling will begin at 9am. The boys wrestling team will compete this upcoming Saturday (December 21) at the New Castle Invitational. The wrestling is scheduled to start at 8:30am.
