On Thursday, the back halls of Western Boone were filled with shouts, cheers, and whistles as both the girls and boys varsity wrestling teams took on the Frankfort Hotdogs. The boys put together a dominate performance, winning 64-7. The boys varsity meet was a lopsided competition that started off at 113lbs. Jackson Bloss earned his first career varsity win with a major decision over his opponent (11-2). At 120lbs, Cale Scagnoli battled the entire six minutes, but came up just short, losing 6-9. Western Boone then put on a pinning party. Jacob Anderson (126), Isaiah Garland (132), Trey Fuston (138), and Lincoln Rose (144) all earned 2nd period pins. Destin Caraballo Mercado received a forfeit at 150lbs. At 157, Kameron Mikesell picked up a second period fall. Broden Wilson (165) started his varsity career off with a third period fall over his opponent. David Puckett (175) and Heath Williams (190) then took care of business in the first period of their matches, each pinning their opponents with minimal effort. Jacob Smith then competed in a raucous match at 215lbs that saw several stoppages for blood time. Smith was within three points late in the third period but got caught in a cradle while working for a takedown and ended up giving his opponent another seven points, and the 4-14 victory. Isaac El-Shahat avenged the loss, though with a dominant second period pin over his opponent to end the meet in the heavyweight weight class. The boys compete again in just two days (Saturday, December 7) when Western Boone plays host to the seven other Sagamore Conference teams for five individual dual meets. Wrestling kicks off at 8:30 in the morning. The girls don’t compete again until December 16, when they will compete in another combined dual with the boys at Tri-West.
