On Tuesday (12/06/2022), the Western Boone varsity wrestling team hosted the Guerin Catholic Golden Eagles in a lopsided wrestling meet. The WeBo wrestlers improved their season record to 4 wins and two losses with a commanding 54-8 victory over Guerin Catholic. Evan Trent (152) got things started with a 41-second pin over his opponent. Andrew Manthey (160) then showed his tenacious side, overcoming a 7-4 second period deficit to win by a 10-7 decision. Trevor Weakley (170) and Ethan Williams (182) continued their unbeaten season with quick pins over their challengers. Williams had the fastest pin of the meet, needing a mere 25 seconds to get the fall. Neither team had competitors in the 195lbs and 220lbs weight classes. In the heavyweight class, Joshua Dickey was defeated 2-8, but was able to battle hard and keep his adversary from earning bonus team points. The Stars got back on their winning ways when Isaac Moore (106) got a first period pin. Jacob Anderson (113) kept things going with a second period pin over his opposition. At 120lbs, Isaiah Garland boldly brawled against last year’s returning state qualifier, Peter Nguyen. Garland’s refusal to submit, stopped the Golden Eagle from being able to get the six team points for a pin, instead holding him to five team points when he was defeated by tech fall. Noah Starks (126) made his varsity debut a good one, picking up a 9-4 victory over his opponent. Trey Fuston (132) followed up with a pin over his challenger in just over one minute. Kameron Mikesell (138) gave the Stars another six points when he picked up the loan forfeit of the evening. In the final varsity match-up, Mason Adams (145) showcased a good mix of patience and aggression to wear down his opponent and earn a third period pin with just 12 seconds left in the match. At the conclusion of the varsity meet, three extra matches were held. Braedyn Mathews epitomized courage by refusing to back down from a heavier opponent, but unfortunately was unable to overcome the difference. Lincoln Rose and Jacob Smith both continued to show that hard work in the practice room pays off, with second period pins over their opponents. The wrestlers travel to Columbus, Indiana on Saturday (12/10/2022) to compete in the Columbus North Invitational. Action starts at 9:00am.
