CRAWFORDSVILLE - The post-season didn't end the way Mason Adams wanted a season ago. After placing third in the regional to earn his ticket to semi-state, Adams suffered a knee injury and saw his season come to a premature end. But now in his senior year, Adams is on a mission to make the most of his final post-season. That was evident Saturday, as he pinned his way to the sectional title at 150 pounds, topping Jaziel Gil-Herrera of Crawfordsville in the final. "Mason is right where he needs to be going forward in this state tournament," Western Boone head coach Wes Mikesell said. "He had a couple of struggles early in the season, but has really flipped his mentality and it's paying off." Adams improved to 25-4 on the season. Mikesell said coming into the year off the injury, Adams needed to feel confident again on his knee on the mat. Once he got into his groove, he hasn't slowed down. "That mental aspect is a big hump you have to get over," Mikesell said. "You are a little cautious to start, but once he started wrestling on it again, he realized its good and he has taken off." Adams will face Hamilton Southeastern's Cohen Davis in the opening round of the regional. The winner will advance to semi-state. Adams was one of four Western Boone wrestlers who earned a spot in next week's regional. At 106 pounds, Cale Scagnoli placed second at 106 pounds, falling to Crawfordsville's Taiga Koyanogi in the final. At 113 pounds, Isaac Moore placed second, falling to Zionsville's Sully Frazier in the final. Kameron Mikesell placed fourth at 144 pounds. As a team, Western Boone placed fourth. "We were hoping to get some more people out, but we wrestled tough all day," Mikesell said. "We ended the day strong, especially in the fifth-place matches, so we were able to help our team score late." Heading into next week's regional, the Star wrestlers will have to win their opening match of the day to advance to the semi-state. Mikesell said there are a couple of things they want to work on heading into the regional. "We struggled a little bit on our feet today, creating angles, running our ties and our moves," Mikesell said. "We are really going to focus on all of that this week."
