On Monday, December 11, 2023, the Western Boone Wrestling team hosted the Tri-West Bruins. The evening also served as an opportunity to recognize future wrestlers for the Stars as elementary and junior high aged wrestlers were introduced at the start of the meet. The gymnasium was filled with cheers and excitement as the high school team won a hard-fought victory over the visiting Bruins, 48-36. The night started off with two junior varsity matchups. Andrew Cox and Braedyn Mathews were successful in defeating their opponents by pin. The varsity match started at 175lbs. David Puckett battled well but was unable to avoid being pinned in the second period. Jacob Smith (190) tied things back up, with the fastest pin of the evening (29 seconds). The Stars forfeited the 215lbs weight class to give the lead back to Tri-West. The Bruins extended their lead to 12 when Joshua Dickey (285) was pinned by 13th ranked opponent. Cale Scagnoli (106) and Isaac Moore (113) each pinned their opponents to tie up the team score for the second time in the meet. Tri-West reclaimed the lead with a pin over Jacob Anderson (120), but Nate Moore (126) started a three-match win streak for the Stars with a first period pin over his opponent. Isaiah Garland received a forfeit at 132 pounds before Lincoln Rose (138) got a first period pin to make the team score 36-24. At 144 pounds, Trey Fuston ran into a little trouble succumbing to his opponent in the second period. Kameron Mikesell (150) continued his undefeated season though with another first period pin. With Western Boone leading by 12 points going into the last two matches, Drew Williams fought valiantly in his effort to avoid giving Tri-West six points, but unfortunately, he was pinned in the third period, narrowing Webo’s lead to 42-36. In the final match of the evening, Heath Williams (165) spoiled Tri-Wests’ triumphant hopes with a 49-second pin over his opponent. This secured the victory for Western Boone. The Stars will have a few days to practice and recover before traveling to the New Castle Invitational on Saturday, December 16, 2023. Wrestling will start at 8:30am.
