The varsity baseball team traveled to Rossville on Monday evening and earned their third straight victory against a state ranked opponent. The stars defeated the #2 ranked Rossville Hornets by a score of 4 to 3. Beau Sawyer started on the mound and for a second outing in a row lead the team to victory. Sawyer pitched 6 complete innings and allowed 0 earned runs. The sophomore right hander only walked one batter in the game while allowing just 4 hits. Easton Nance has accepted his role, moving from starter to closer. Nance earned the save by closing the door in the seventh inning; Nance allowed 0 earned runs, struck out one, and allowed one hit. Defense was anchored up the middle. Senior Layton Yancey was very busy all night making numerous good plays at short-stop. Mason Foster caught a tremendous game and with the exception of one cross up between him and Sawyer, Foster didn’t let a ball past all night. Owen Howe took advantage of all his chances at second base. Corner infielders Quinn Westerfeld and Easton Nance took care of the ball as well. Outfield play lead by Jack Mallory and flanked by Kahne Reid, Kane Jackson, and Cale Scagnoli was a major reason for the Stars success. Offense started red hot by scoring 3 runs in the top of the first and then 1 again in the second inning. Easton Nance lead in the hit column going two for three. Quinn Westerfeld recorded a double and Beau Sawyer a single for the Stars other two hits. RBIs were recorded by Owen Howe, Jack Mallory, and Layton Yancey. Senior Zach Sprong was busy pinch running throughout the game. Rossville isn’t ranked so highly by mistake, after the second inning their pitcher kept the Stars off balance the rest of the game. The boys stuck together and fought hard to earn their third straight victory against an opponent ranked in the top five in the state. Webo must immediately turn their attention to this week’s MAC match-up with Crawfordsville.
