The Western Boone boys golf team hosted Frankfort in their season opening match at Cool Lake on Tuesday night, falling just short in the varsity competition by a score of 180-171. Despite the loss, the Stars saw several positives to build on as they look to take a big step forward this season. In posting their second-best 9-hole score in the past three seasons, the Stars were led by strong performances from three freshmen. Carson Richardson led the way with a 44, followed by Tim Boddicker and Rex Stanley who both posted scores of 45. Returning senior Luke LaGrange added the final tally with a 46. With the next best scores accounting for the JV portion of the contest, the Stars were victorious 196 – 209, exhibiting the depth that the new roster holds. Returner Alex Thompson, 47; first year golfer, Brennan Kopriva, 48; returner, Ben Twitty, 49; and freshman Landen Miller, 52, accounted for the scoring. Twitty’s score of 49 showed an amazing 18-stroke improvement over his score just a year ago. New Seniors, golfing for the first time in their Webo athletic careers, who also posted strong debut scores were Luke Cummins with a 52 and Jonathon Rutherford carding a 55. In the effort, the JV shattered their season average scoring goal and came within one stroke of their low round goal for the entire season. The Stars varsity will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Bear Slide GC to face hosting Hamilton Heights.
