Western Boone left no doubt it belonged among the MAC’s elite on Saturday, battling its way to a third-place finish at the inaugural Monon Athletic Conference Wrestling Championship on January 17 at North Montgomery High School. Against a full conference field, the Stars piled up 187.5 team points with 13 wrestlers competing in 14 weight classes, finishing behind only Southmont and Crawfordsville. From the opening rounds through the final bouts of the night, Western Boone showed grit, balance, and an ability to respond when momentum swung. The highlight of the day came at 190 pounds, where Jacob Smith delivered one of the most commanding performances of the tournament. Smith stormed through his bracket with three pins, capping his run with a first-period fall in the championship finals to secure Western Boone’s lone individual conference title. Jacob Anderson powered his way to the finals at 150 pounds, mixing toughness and control to reach the championship bout before settling for a hard-earned second-place finish. His run helped anchor the Stars in the middle of the lineup. Western Boone’s depth proved just as critical. Third-place finishes from Klayton Mikesell (113), Tyson Riner (126), David Puckett (215), and Jackson Jones (285) kept the Stars firmly in the team race throughout the day. Each navigated the consolation rounds with urgency, turning setbacks into point-scoring opportunities. The Stars added fourth-place finishes from Jackson Bloss (120), Colton Mitchell (132), Isaiah Garland (138), Charlie Jones (144), and Broden Wilson (175), further underscoring the lineup’s consistency. Pins came at key moments across multiple weight classes, and Western Boone repeatedly answered challenges from conference rivals. When the final team scores were tallied, Western Boone stood on the podium in the first MAC Championship of its kind, setting a strong foundation for the future of conference wrestling. Western Boone will return to the mat on Tuesday, January 20, traveling to Greencastle for a dual meet scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
