Multiple Teams · Collier and Dukes at Cross Country Semi-State

Two Western Boone cross country runners competed at the IHSAA Semi-State meet at New Prairie H.S. on Saturday.  Running in unseasonably warm conditions and in a large and competitive field of 179 runners, Colton Collier and Blake Dukes represented Western Boone well.  Collier finished in 119th place in 17:49.7.  His time on the challenging New Prairie course was only 12 seconds from his personal best, and it was the fastest time by a Western Boone runner at a Semi-State meet since 1998.  Dukes finished in 165th place in 18:58.4.

Multiple Teams · Dukes and Collier Advance to Cross Country Semi-State

The Western Boone high school cross country team competed at the IHSAA Regional meet at the Tippecanoe Amphitheater in West Lafayette on Saturday.  It was the first time in school history that both the boys and girls teams have competed at Regionals in the same year.  The Stars’ boys team finished well in 7th place with 195 points, tying the school’s best-ever finish at a cross country Regional.  The girls team finished 9th with 224 points.  McCutcheon won for the boys with 40 points, and West Lafayette won for the girls with 31 points.

Colton Collier ran a gutsy race and led the field through the first kilometer, but it was Blake Dukes, running more consistently, who finished as the Stars’ first runner.  Dukes placed 31st in 17:45, which was only one second from his personal best time.  Collier finished just a little behind in 34th in 17:53.  Senior Hunter Martin, battling a season-long injury and running in the last race of his high school career, was next for the Stars in 52nd in 18:29.  Jacob Imbus, who improved substantially during the final few weeks of the season, was fourth for the team in a personal-best time of 18:57 in 64th.  Timmy Coffman rounded out the scoring team in 67th in 19:11.  Also running well for the Stars were Nik Pierce in 71st in 19:26 and Caden Baird in 77th in 19:33.

In the girls’ race, Lauryn Florey was Western Boone’s top finisher in 35th in 21:48.  Jordan Randolph ran strongly and finished nearly half a minute faster than last year at Regionals; she was 49th in 22:28.  Mollie Gourley also ran well and was 60th in 22:56.  Jenna Mahin, coming back from an injury, finished in 65th in 23:12.  Senior Lizzie Hendricks claimed the final scoring position for the Lady Stars in 77th in 24:35.  Senior Katie Potter also ran well in 80th in 24:50, and Josie Mahin was 83rd in 25:04.

Both Dukes and Collier advanced to next week’s IHSAA Semi-State meet by virtue of being among the top ten finishers from non-advancing teams.  They will compete next Saturday at the IHSAA Semi-State meet at New Prairie High School.

Multiple Teams · Cross Country Makes History: Both Boys and Girls Teams Qualify for Regionals

The Western Boone cross country team traveled to the Tippecanoe Amphitheater in West Lafayette on Saturday to compete in the IHSAA Sectional.  For the first time in school history, both the Western Boone boys and girls teams qualified for Regionals in the same year.  In cross country, the top five teams at Sectionals qualify for Regionals, and Western Boone’s boys and girls both finished 5th out of 12 teams to qualify.  The Stars boys finished with 160 points, and the girls had 143 points.  State-ranked West Lafayette won for both the boys and girls with 29 and 23 points, respectively.

In the boys’ race, the Stars came focused and ready to compete, and nearly every runner was close to or improved upon their best time.  Colton Collier got into a good position early and led the way for the Stars in 20th in 17:39, just 1 second shy of his personal best.  He was followed by Blake Dukes in 28th in 18:09.  The strong efforts of the remaining scoring runners to get under 19:00 is what punched the boys’ ticket to Regionals:  Hunter Martin (32nd) in 18:36, Timmy Coffman (39th) in 18:58, and Jacob Imbus (41st) in 18:59.  Those times were personal bests for Coffman and Imbus.  Nik Pierce (50th) and Caden Baird (52nd) also ran well for the Stars.  This is the fourth-ever Western Boone boys cross country team to qualify for Regionals and the first boys team since Coach Lively’s own team in 1994.

In the girls’ race, Lauryn Florey led the Lady Stars with a 22nd-place finish in 22:03.  Jordan Randolph (24th) and Mollie Gourley (27th) finished close together shortly thereafter in 22:33 and 22:41, respectively.  Rounding out the scoring team were Katie Potter (39th), who finished in 23:39, and Jenna Mahin (41st), who, though injured, battled through to help the girls advance.  Josie Mahin (52nd) and Lizzie Hendricks (54th) also ran well for the Lady Stars.  This is the second year in a row that the girls team has qualified for Regionals, and it’s the first time any Western Boone cross country team, boys or girls, has qualified for Regionals in back-to-back years.

The Stars will return to the Tippecanoe Amphitheater in West Lafayette next Saturday to compete in the IHSAA Regional.  The boys will race at 10:30 a.m., and the girls will run at 11:10 a.m.
