The Western Boone H.S. cross country team competed at the IHSAA
Sectional meet at White River Elementary in Noblesville on Saturday morning.
With their strong performances, the Lady Stars qualified as a team for
the IHSAA Regional meet for the second consecutive year and only the
fourth time in school history. In cross country, the top five teams at
sectionals qualify for regionals, and the Lady Stars earned 5th as a
team with 138 points, just 5 points ahead of 6th-place Lebanon. Carmel,
ranked #2 in the state, won with 22 points, followed by #9-ranked
Noblesville with 61, #19-ranked Westfield with 94, and Guerin Catholic
Audrey Knoper led the way for the Lady Stars with an 8th-place finish in
19:23.4. Katheryn Rutherford really helped the team’s score with her
12th-place finish in a season-best 19:46.9. Sydney Haag also ran
strongly among the state’s top runners and finished 35th in 21:13.7.
Emma Mitchell achieved a new personal best of 22:20.4, cutting 8 seconds
off her previous best time enroute to finishing 41st. Samantha Jones
also earned a personal best; she lowered her time by 4 seconds to
22:24.4 and finished 42nd. Emily Parsons achieved a personal best as
well, improving by 24 seconds to run 23:12.3 and finishing 45th. Hannah
Haag finished in 49th in 24:44.8 to round out the team.
In the boys race, seniors Jared Brown and Anthony Keppel led the way for
the Stars. Brown finished 49th in 20:02.2, followed by Keppel in 51st
in 20:19.5. Lane Hardee achieved a personal best, improving his time by
9 seconds to finish in 20:41.5 in 52nd. Carter Hanna was 53rd in
21:00.7, followed by Graham Cavins in 55th in 21:32.6. Levi LaGrange,
running injured, fought to the finish line in 58th in 22:35.7.
As a team, the Western Boone boys finished 8th with 241 points.
Noblesville, ranked #3 in the state, won with 16 points, followed by
#2-ranked Carmel with 58, and #14 Westfield with 62, and #20 Guerin
Catholic with 123.
The Lady Stars will return to White River Elementary in Noblesville next
Saturday to compete in the IHSAA Regional meet.
