News · Knoper leads the pack as Cross Country Girls finish 2nd and Boys finish 8th at Ben Davis Invitational

On Saturday, the Western Boone high school cross country team
participated in the Ben Davis XC Invitational.  Due to COVID-19, the
meet was split into “purple” and “white” races, which were more or less
big-school and small-school races.  Western Boone was put into the
latter category.

In the girls race, Audrey Knoper decimated the field with an incredible
solo performance, finishing nearly two minutes ahead of the second-place
finisher.  Her time of 19:08 was a season-best for her.  Katheryn
Rutherford also ran well and earned a 4th-place finish in 21:35.  Sydney
Haag achieved a season-best time, too, finishing in 22:02 in 7th.  A
confident Emma Mitchell ran a very strong race and finished in 14th in
22:59.  Just a few seconds later Naomi Reid, who also ran a strong race,
finished in 16th in 23:04.  Rounding out the varsity squad were Samantha
Jones in 29th in 24:34 and Hannah Haag in 33rd in 24:50.  Emily Parsons,
who finished 37th, earned a personal best of 24:58, which was a
19-second improvement.  Bekah Truby achieved a season-best 32:28 and
finished 68th.  Katherine Mateika also earned a personal best, cutting 8
seconds off her previous best to finish in 32:43 in 69th.  The Lady
Stars were 2nd as a team with 42 points, just two points away from
winner North Central with 40.

In the boys race, senior Jared Brown led the way for the Stars for the
first time in his cross country career.  Brown started the race
conservatively and then consistently moved up throughout the race to
finish in 21:23 in 42nd.  Not far behind was Lane Hardee in 45th in
21:33, which was a 28-second personal best for him. Anthony Keppel was
next for the Stars in 51st in 22:05, followed by Graham Cavins in 55th
in 22:29.  Carter Hanna, who got injured during the race, hobbled to the
finish line in 69th in order for the boys to score as a team.  The Stars
were 8th with 210 points out of 9 teams.

The Stars will compete at the Tiger Cross Country Invitational in
Lebanon on Thursday.
