The Western Boone high school cross country team traveled to Hamilton Heights on Thursday evening for the Landes Invitational. The Lady Stars were the team champions with 39 points, besting runner-up Hamilton
Heights (49 points) and five other schools. The Stars boys’ team was 5th out of 8 teams with 110 points; University won the boys’ team competition with 62 points. Finish times were fast for nearly everyone due to a short course.
The girls’ victory marked only the second time any Western Boone team has won at the Landes Invitational since the meet’s inception in 1996.
In the girls’ race, the Lady Stars placed three runners in the top five, which put the team in a strong position to win. Audrey Knoper finished comfortably in second for the second year in a row in 19:15. A confident Sydney Haag ran strongly to finish in third in 20:29. Katheryn Rutherford also ran strongly and finished fifth in 21:09. Rounding out the scoring team were Naomi Reid and Hannah Haag who ran most of the race together and finished in 16th and 17th, just three seconds apart (22:30 and 22:33). Emma Mitchell (20th, 23:06) and Bekah Truby (34th, 26:05) also ran well.
In the boys’ race, Colton Collier ran consistently throughout the race and mustered a good effort in a tough sprint at the end to finish second in 16:19, edging out the third-place runner by just two seconds. Freshman Levi LaGrange had a break-out race and finished as the team’s second runner in 19:24 (22nd), four minutes faster than his previous time. Caden Baird was next for the Stars in 25th in 19:31, followed by Anthony Keppel in 32nd in 19:44. Jared Brown (40th, 20:30) and Jacob Parsons (41st, 20:38) rounded out the boys’ team.
The Stars will compete Saturday at the Terre Haute Savings Bank State Preview Meet.
