This past Saturday morning, the Western Boone Junior High Cross Country teams raced at the Sheridan Small School Invitational. With one meet under their shoes, the Lady Stars’ confidence guided them to a victory over 3 other scoring teams. WeBo won with 39 points, followed by Alexandria-Monroe with 53 and Lafayette Central Catholic with 56. The WeBo boys also did very well achieving 2nd place out of 6 teams. The boys race was won by Lafayette Central Catholic with 26 points, then WeBo with 42, and Clinton Central was 3rd with 80 points.
The Lady Stars started the race further back in the pack and slowly edged their way to the front toward the middle of the race. The fight for first place from that point on was between WeBo’s top 2 runners – Samantha Jones & Bailey Haag. With about 400 meters left, Haag started breaking away and ended up winning with a personal best time of 13:38. Jones finished in 2nd place in 13:53. The Stars had 5 more runners in the top 20, solidifying back-to-back wins for this meet. Emily Parsons ran in 8th place with a time of 14:45, while Rosie Rogers ran a personal best time for the season in 15:14 (12th). The next 3 runners also has PR’s (Personal Records) as did most of the remaining team members. 17th place was achieved by Cara Hanna with a break-out performance of 15:42, closely followed by Charlotte Stucky in 15:44 (19th) and Bethany Martin in 15:47 (20th). All 3 had PR’s of 35 seconds with Hanna leading the way with an amazing improvement of over 7 minutes. Other great performances with PR times were by Brook Boss (26th), Janelle Gearheart (30th), Carli Hanna (38th), and Summer McCormick (43rd). Running injured was a determined Bailey Keyes in 40th place.
For the boys race, the Stars’ top runner – Lane Hardee – ran with his best time ever in 4th place overall (11:51), despite running with an injured knee and against a fast lead group. He was followed by a very focused Collin Washburn (12:40 – 6th place), Issac Threlkeld (12:43 – 7th place), Graham Cavins (13:05 – 11th place) and Luke LaGrange (13:22 – 14th place). Other strong runs were seen by Landyn Hardee (22nd), Alex Crockett (23rd), and Brawn Puckett (48th). A few of the Stars struggled, but finishing strong were Carter Hanna (33rd), Dragan Sherven (63rd) and Keaton Deane (68th). Several PR times were performed – both Hardee boys, Cavins, Puckett, and Deane.
The Stars’ next race is at the Terre Haute Savings Bank Invitational on Saturday, September 7th at the Lavern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in rural Terre Haute.
