Boys Varsity Football · Stars hold off Blue Devils, advance to sectional final

Oct 26, 2018

Dover – The No. 1 rated team in Class 2A stayed alive at home on Friday night.

Spencer Wright rushed for a touchdown and threw for a pair of touchdowns as Western Boone earned a hard fought 28-20 victory over Class 2A No. 6 rated Tipton in the Sectional 38 semifinal.

“We had a lot of calls not go our way tonight and a lot of penalties that really helped them out,” said Western Boone coach Justin Pelley. “We’re kind of able to morph into what people give us and tonight on a sloppy field it was Brett Wethington and Kruze Washington running the ball with Wright directing the show.”

With a combined record of 19-1 entering tonight’s game and after a 21-14 victory in last year’s sectional semifinal at Tipton both sides expected a tight game and neither disappointed.

Western Boone (11-0) was able to strike on its first possession by going 74 yards in seven plays. Wethington found space up the middle to score from 36 yards out to put the Stars in front 7-0 less than three minutes in.

The Blue Devils (9-2) then had an answer on their first drive with a lengthy 12 play 66 yard march. Quarterback KJ Roudebush scored from 5 yards out and it was 7-7 after one quarter.

After forcing a Western Boone punt the Blue Devils took over at the Stars’ 39 yard line with designs on taking a late first quarter lead. Peyton Young intercepted Roudebush in the end zone, however, and returned it to the Stars’ 13 yard line to stop the drive.

“It wasn’t a bad read, it was just a bad throw,” said Tipton coach Aaron Tolle. “He just overthrew him a bit. Tonight our kids really fought hard, but we just made a few more mistakes than they did. Maybe that’s credit to their kids and their coaching staff.”

Western Boone was able to respond with an 11 play, 87-yard drive following the interception to take a 14-7 lead midway through the second quarter. Wright scored on a keeper from three yards out, but Tipton did not go away.

The Blue Devils were able to put together a late first half scoring drive by taking over after a punt with 3:59 left in the half. They moved 68 yards in 11 plays to score on a short Roudebush run with 29 seconds left, but the extra point was now good. That gave the Stars a slim 14-13 lead at the half.

Neither team was able to score in the third quarter, but Western Boone found the end zone again with 11:10 left in the game when Luke Kernodle caught a 35-yard pass from Wright to make it 21-13.

On Tipton’s next possession he Blue Devils made a decision that ended up turning the game. Facing fourth down deep in its own territory Tipton attempted a fake punt with Roudebush, but it came up short. Western Boone took over on the Tipton 31 yard line and score four plays later when Wright found Logan Benson for a 26-yard touchdown to make it 28-13 with 6:51 left.

Tipton did manage a final touchdown with 2:06 left when Roudebush found Luke Stoker for a 6-yard score.

The Blue Devils very nearly recovered the onside kick, but Western Boone was able to come up with it and run the clock down to 33 seconds before punting the ball back. Tipton was unable to mount a desperation drive to tie.

Western Boone will host North Putnam in the sectional final on Friday. North Putnam was a 15-6 winner over Cascade in the other semifinal.

“Honestly, we haven’t looked at North Putnam a lot because we were looking entirely at Tipton,” said Pelley. “We’ll celebrate this one tonight, but be back early in the morning to prepare for North Putnam.”
