The Western Boone H.S. cross country team competed at the Terre Haute Savings Bank Invitational on Saturday at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute. Western Boone runners shined, achieving individual victories in both the boys and girls races in the Class 1A-3A division.
As a team, the Lady Stars earned a second-place team finish with 84 points, just barely edging out third-place Lebanon by one point. Shakamak won with 74 points in a competition that featured 10 complete teams. The girls’ second-place team finish ties the highest finish by Western Boone at this meet, which was achieved two years ago.
Audrey Knoper ran aggressively from the front and pulled away over the last 2 km to win in 20:44.9, which was 41 seconds ahead of the second-place runner from Shakamak. Sydney Haag ran very well, too, starting more conservatively and moving up throughout the race. She finished tenth in a personal best time of 22:43.8. Jordan Randolph, Jenna Mahin, and Naomi Reid (who ran a 17-second personal best of 25:04.5) rounded out the scoring team in 26th, 28th, and 31st, respectively. Izzy Moore also ran a personal best of 25:25.7 in 34th.
In the boys’ race, the Stars were fifth with 142 points out of 14 complete teams. Lebanon was fourth with 139 points, and West Vigo won with 81 points.
Colton Collier ran strongly at the front of the pack throughout the race and finished with an incredible kick to win in 17:31.3. His time was a personal best for him and moves him up to 28th on the school’s all-time list. Blake Dukes also earned a top-10 finish, placing 7th in 18:37.2. Caden Baird (37th), Jacob Imbus (45th), and Jacob Parsons (54th) rounded out the scoring team.
The Stars will compete in the Charger Classic at North Montgomery on Thursday.
