A perfect Saturday morning brought North Putnum to Webo to play baseball against our 6th and 7th grade team. Although the young Stars are still improving, they struggled as a whole losing 8-1. Our pitchers had trouble finding the strike zone and our bats did not make a lot of noise.
Offensively, collecting one hit each for Western Boone was Zayne Sturgis and Mason Bragg.
The 6th and 7th grade team will be back in action tonight as they host Frankfort starting at 6 pm.
Our 8th grade baseball team hosted North Putnum on Saturday afternoon as well. Neither team lead by more than one run, with the score being tied after 4 of the 7 innings. Timely hitting and good base running proved to be the difference in the Stars’ 6-5 walk off victory.
Casey Baird, the starting pitcher, had a superb outing. Baird gave up 3 earned runs in 4 1/3 innings pitched, letting his defense do the work for him. Baird, zero strikeouts, was able to coax the North Putnum hitters into 4 ground balls and 8 fly balls for outs. Elliott Young was effective in relief as well. Pitching 2 2/3s, 1 earned run, striking out one, while getting 1 ground ball and 6 fly balls for outs.
Jake Hendricks had a nice day in center field, catching all 4 fly balls hit his way. Our catcher, Mitch Miller, caught 3 foul balls for outs.
Hitters, John Harlos, Elliott Beck-King, John Jackson, Miller and Young each had two hits. Three of our ten hits came in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jackson led off with a single to right center. Miller flew out to center for the first out. Jackson advanced to third on a sharply hit infield single by Harlos. Baird was intentionally walked to load the bases. Jackson scored the winning run on Young’s walk off single to left center.
The Sheridan Blackhawks will roll into town on Wednesday for a 6 pm game.
