The Western Boone high school cross country team competed at the IHSAA Sectional meet at the Tippecanoe Amphitheater in West Lafayette on Saturday morning.
The Lady Stars had an outstanding morning, with five of the seven girls achieving personal bests. Leading the girls was senior Alexis Goglia who ran a very strong race and earned a top-ten finish. Goglia was 9th in a new school-record time of 20:31, an improvement of 16 seconds upon her previous record. Next was freshman Krisha Griffith in 29th in 22:23, followed by sophomore Lizzie Hendricks in 36th in a personal-best time of 22:52. Goglia, Griffith, and Hendricks each advanced to next week’s IHSAA Regional meet by virtue of being among the top 10 finishers from non-advancing teams. Three other girls achieved big personal bests in their final meet of the season: Holly Foxworthy ran 23:05 (41st), an improvement of 0:33; Brittany Hieston ran 24:00 (45th), an improvement of 0:41; and Josie Mahin ran 24:27 (50th), an improvement of 1:01. Senior Kylie Dobbs rounded out the team in 24:53 (52nd). The Lady Stars team placed 6th with 152 points, just one place away from advancing as a team to the IHSAA Regional.
On the boys’ side, sophomore Hunter Martin led the way with a 21st-place finish in 17:18. Close behind him was senior Matthew VanDokkenburg in 23rd in 17:23. Both Martin and VanDokkenburg advanced to next week’s IHSAA Regional meet by virtue of being among the top 10 finishers from non-advancing teams. Cody Rice and Nick Biddle were next for the Stars, finishing in 19:09 (56th) and 19:26 (60th), respectively. Alex Hale, who ran 20:00 (67th), earned the only boys’ personal best of the day. Rounding out the boys team was Jacob Imbus in 21:46 (73rd) and Chris Thomas in 32:19 (78th). The Stars team placed 10th with 224 points.
The five individual advancers will compete at the IHSAA Regional meet next Saturday at the Tippecanoe Amphitheater.
