The Western Boone high school cross country team competed at the Sagamore Conference Cross Country Championships at Southmont on Saturday morning. In the chilly and blustery conditions, the Stars girls team was 2nd, and the boys team was 7th. North Montgomery won the girls’ team competition, and Danville won the boys’.
Alexis Goglia ran a strong race and finished 4th in 21:34. Her top-ten finish earned her First Team All-Conference honors. Krisha Griffith, who finished 14th in 23:04, and Lizzie Hendricks, who finished 18th in 24:00, both earned Second Team All-Conference honors. Rounding out the Lady Stars’ scoring team were two runners who achieved personal bests despite the hilly course and windy conditions: Brittany Hieston lowered her time by 40 seconds to finish 23rd in 24:41, and Josie Mahin lowered her time by 8 seconds to finish 25th in 25:28. Kylie Dobbs (28th in 25:42) and Abbigail Merrill (33rd in 26:40) also ran in the varsity race. Olivia Richardson ran in the junior varsity race and finished 6th in 29:03.
On the boys’ side, two Western Boone runners earned First Team All-Conference honors. Hunter Martin led the way with an 8th-place finish in 17:49. And showing great determination and closing a gap of nearly 50m with only 400m to go in the race, Matthew VanDokkenburg passed a competitor just before the finish line to take 10th place and the final First Team All-Conference spot; he finished in a time of 18:01. Cody Rice (33rd in 20:00), Nick Biddle (35th in 20:19), and Alex Hale (40th in 20:58) rounded out the Stars’ scoring team. Jacob Imbus (49th in 21:57) and Chris Thomas (53rd in 25:21) also ran in the varsity race.
The Stars will compete at the IHSAA Sectional meet next Saturday at the Tippecanoe Amphitheater in West Lafayette.
