The Western Boone high school cross country team competed at the Tiger Invitational in Lebanon on Thursday evening. The Stars had an outstanding showing at the meet, which included Clinton Central, Lebanon, Sheridan, and University.
The Lady Stars were the highlight of the evening. All five of the girls’ scoring runners finished in the top 10, and all seven varsity runners finished in the top 15. By virtue of their efforts and strong performances, the girls’ team earned first place in the team competition. Western Boone had 27 points, followed by University with 59, Lebanon with 64, and Clinton Central with 74.
Senior Alexis Goglia dominated the girls’ race. Goglia pulled away from the field at the start and never looked back. She won by a very comfortable 43-second margin in 22:10. Western Boone’s first three runners all finished in the top five and earned medals for their efforts. They were: Goglia, freshman Krisha Griffith (3rd, 23:32), and sophomore Lizzie Hendricks (5th, 23:43). Hendricks ran an exceptionally good race; she shadowed Griffith for most of the race and achieved the team’s only personal best for the night, lowering her time by eight seconds. Other girls who scored for the Lady Stars were Holly Foxworthy in 8th and Abbigail Merrill in 10th. Merrill ran a very good race, too, missing her personal best by only two seconds.
Sophomore Hunter Martin won the boys’ race in 18:03. Martin pulled away in the second half of the race to win by 12 seconds. Other boys who scored for the Stars were Cody Rice (8th), Nick Biddle (17th), Alex Hale (27th), and Chris Thomas (46th). Clinton Central won the boys’ team competition with 44 points, followed by Lebanon with 46, University with 60, and Western Boone with 73.
The Stars will compete at the Flashrock Invitational in Carmel on Saturday.
