The Western Boone high school cross country team competed at the Leap Into September Invitational at Southmont on Tuesday afternoon. A warmer-than-usual temperature took its toll on many of the runners, but the Stars did their best despite the conditions.
The Lady Stars placed 2nd in the team competition with 40 points behind Benton Central with 23. Lebanon was 3rd with 64.
Western Boone’s girls ran with heart and, pushing through the hot conditions, placed all five of their scoring runners in the top 15. Alexis Goglia led the way with a 5th-place finish, followed by Lizzie Hendricks who ran an exceptional race to finish in 6th, Krisha Griffith in 8th, Holly Foxworthy in 11th, and Abbigail Merrill in 15th. Kylie Dobbs and Josie Mahin also ran well, placing 17th and 18th, respectively. Rounding out the girls were Brittany Hieston in 25th and Olivia Richardson in 26th.
The boys’ team was hampered by the loss of Hunter Martin, who was injured during the race. The Stars placed 5th with 91 points behind Crawfordsville (48), Lebanon (53), Southmont (60), and Benton Central (85).
Matthew VanDokkenburg ran a strong race to earn 4th place, missing the medals by just six seconds. Cody Rice was 13th, Nick Biddle 17th, Jacob Imbus 28th, Alex Hale 31st, and Chris Thomas 46th.
The Stars will compete at the Landes Invitational at Hamilton Heights on Thursday.
