DOVER — The Western Boone Lady Stars came into last night’s game looking to advance to the Sugar Creek Classic Championship for the seventh time in the eight year history of the tournament, as they took on the Mounties of Southmont.
After a shaky first half, the Stars pulled away in the second half to earn a 53-31 victory.
The Mounties held an 8-5 lead over Western Boone after the first quarter.
However, a quick 8-0 run, over the first two and a half minutes of the second quarter, put the Stars up five. They would stretch the lead to seven before Southmont’s Marlow McVay hit a three at the buzzer to cut the lead to four, 25-21.
“Olivia Hole getting in foul trouble hurt,” said Coach Rich Schelsky of the first half. “She’s a difference maker with not only her ball handling, but scoring, defense, and quickness. We missed not having her on the floor in the first half.”
The Stars opened the second half with back-to-back triples from Olivia Hole and JuliaHole, along with two point baskets from Rachel Ramey and Olivia Hole to stretch the lead to 14.
The Mounties would never get closer than 12 the rest of the way.
“We were able to pull away in the second half by just calming down,” said Schelsky. “I challenged them at the half. I thought South wanted to win the game more than us, and they were ready to play. We had the heart-to-heart, and they toughened up and competed.”
Ramey led the Stars with 16.
Olivia hole chipped in 10 and Julia Hole added 8. Ramey also pulled down a game high eight rebounds.
When asked what the Stars needed to do tomorrow to win another championship, Coach Schelsky responded, “we’ve got to take care of the basketball. We’ve got to handle the moment. This is their chance, as a team, to leave their mark on this tournament, this season, and their legacy. We’ll have to play defensively like we did in the second half to beat a good Crawfordsville team.”
Tip-off for tomorrow’s championship is at 8:00 at Western Boone.
